How do I get started?

The first step is to contact our office by calling, emailing, or filling out the contact form on our website. Our Practice Manager, Shawna Ridgley, will make initial contact to get basic information from you, help you choose a counselor, and schedule your first appointment.

Please visit Our Staff  page to learn more about each of our counselors. If we are unable to get to the phone right away, please leave your name and number on our voicemail, and we will get back to you as soon as possible.

What can I expect on the first session?

Prior to your first session we will ask you to complete the intake form to help your counselor better understand your entire situation. The intake form can be found on our Client Paperwork page.  During your first session you can expect to discuss the concern(s) that brought you into counseling along with your background and personal history.

How does counseling help?

There is a lot of research that give evidence in support of the health benefits to counseling.  When the client-counselor relationship is working well, the counseling process can help you begin to develop new insight and increased self-awareness into your situation(s). You can obtain a better understanding of your own behaviors, ways of thinking, and have a better expression and management of emotions. Counseling is a process which may not always feel comfortable as difficult emotions and ways of conducting yourself often need to be decluttered in order for change to exist.

How long does a counseling session take and how often will I meet with my counselor?

Counseling sessions are typically scheduled for 50 minutes. After your first session, you and your counselor will come to an agreement as to how often you will meet. Generally speaking, most people see their counselor once a week to keep momentum going and for consistent progress to be made.

Is what I say kept confidential?

Yes. Counselors must protect the private information of past, current , and potential clients. As counselors, it is our duty to follow the American Counseling Association (ACA) Code of Ethics. Only in rare occasions will disclosure be required to protect the client or identified others from serious or forseeable harm, or when legal requirements demand that confidential information be revealed.
