OBSESSIVE-COMPULSIVE DISORDERS

OBSESSIVE-COMPULSIVE AND RELATED DISORDERS (OCRDs)

Obsessive-Compulsive and Related Disorders (OCRDs) are a group of symptoms that often occur at the same time as anxiety, however, there remains enough difference between the two to justify categorizing OCRDs as a separate category. OCRDs are characterized by:

  • Repetitive thoughts
  • Distressing emotions and
  • Compulsive behaviors

How this manifests is different in the types of thoughts, emotions and behaviors you may experience.  The disorders categorized as Obsessive-Compulsive include:

  • Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder
  • Body Dysmorphic Disorder
  • Hoarding Disorder
  • Trichotillomania and
  • Excoriation Disorder

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What causes OCD?

Compulsions are behaviors that are learned, but that may have become habitual or repetitive for you.  Anxiety often precipitates the compulsive behavior and when you are unable to satisfy, the repetition, for example, you may experience even greater anxiety. Distorted beliefs, which are addressed in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, can be addressed as they can reinforce and maintain these symtoms.

What is Trichotillomania?

Trichotillomania (trik-o-til-o-MAY-nee-uh) is the act of engaging in pulling one's own hair, despite trying to stop. If you are suffering from Trichotellomania, you may experience an irresistible urge to pull your hair from your eyebrows, your scalp or other areas of your body.

What is Excoriation Disorder?

Excoriation means to pick one's skin in order to lessen anxiety.
