INDIVIDUAL COUNSELING

What is the purpose of this? Will I feel better after?

Yes, that is the goal of therapy. As we peel back the layers of your core issues however, there may be times when you feel as if you'd like to feel better, faster.  Therapy is not linear, it's rather circutous and you will learn a great deal about yourself along the way.

What can I expect from therapy?

Gaining insight and awareness into how your feelings, thoughts and behaviors are contributing to your issues and keep you "stuck" is one of our primary goals.

I have pretty specific things I want to talk about. Is that OK?

Absolutely. You are in a safe, non-judgmental and accepting space. We are respectful of the journey you are on and encourage you to share your intimate feelings and the goals which you have for yourself, which in turn allows us to develop a custom treatment plan for your care.

What kinds of issues can you help me with? I can't really pinpoint what's wrong.

Therapy is a place to explore your feelings and thoughts on a deeper level. There is no issue that is off limits and in fact, there are many issues that bring clients to therapy.

Perhaps you've suffered a loss recently, or even in the distant past that is triggering feelings of sadness, anger or depression. Or perhaps your relationships - social, intimate or professional - are no longer satisfying or bringing the results you need.  Or perhaps you know there's a need for change but don't know where to start and are feeling stressed, restless and hopeless.  We can help with all these issues and more.

COUPLES COUNSELING

What can we expect from Couples Counseling? Will it make things better or will it just expose how much trouble we're in?

Becoming aware of how your thinking and emotions are making you behavior is one of our goals. We often think certain things, or behave in certain ways because it's the only thing we know. This is true for individuals and couples, but when you're in a relationship, you have the extra layer of oftentimes modeling the behavior of your parents.  This is true for both of you, so we will unravel these feelings and thoughts that lead to behaviors that are becoming issues.

Is couples therapy only for those in trouble? We've been together a long time, it's just that things are not quite the same. Can you help us?

Yes. Couples counseling isn't only for couples experiencing several problems. It's also for couples who want to enhance their marriage, to improve communication, to find a new way to relate to one another and to reignite the spark that brought them together initially. Whether you want to repair or enhance your marriage or relationship, we can help.

Do I have to come in with my spouse or partner?

No. A change in the perspective in one of you may influence the other to take the step towards therapy as well. In fact, we often meet with each of you separately even if you do initially come in as a couple, to gain your personal perspective on what you feel are your core issues.

How long does Couples Counseling take?

Every situation, and every couple, are unique. But according to the American Academy for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT) most couples therapy takes betweeen 12 to 20 sessions and those partaking in it, report a 98% success rate.

CHILD & ADOLESCENT COUNSELING

What kinds of problems can you help us with in regards to our child?

Serious changes in learn, behavior and handling emotions are signals that your child may benefit from therapy.

I don't want to stigmitize my child any more than he is by making him "the problem". How can you make sure this doesn't happen?

You're correct in your concern. You are talking about a very common occurrence In families in which one person begins to be seen as "the problem" where in reality, there is a systemic problem with the family as a whole and this one person is simply displaying the symptoms.

Can my husband and I see you with my child or is it then family therapy?

Whether you are involved in your child's therapy depends on a number of factors including the age and and the behavioral changes that we'd like to bring about. For young children, it's often advisable for the parents to be involved in order to bring about structural behavioral change at home and outside the therapy room.  Treatment for older children and adolescents often includes just your child and the therapist to ensure privacy and trust. These options are all explained and discussed.
