FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
I've been disagnosed with Acute Stress Disorder; what does this mean?
Acute Stress Disorder differs from Posttraumatic Stress Disorder in terms of the time that you've suffered the symptoms. Acute Stress Disorder means that you suffered the symtoms within six months of the trauma. PTSD is from six months and extending forward.
I suffered through abuse as a child, both physical and emotional but am still struggling, especially since the birth of my latest child. Could this possibly be some sort of traumatic stress?
Yes, it could. It has clearly been more than six months since your traumatic experiences and reliving previous traumas based on something that is happening in your current life is very common. Sometimes the risk of exposing the pain of the trauma at the time is simply too much to bear and the memories stay hidden for many years. It's important that you seek help as therapy is extremely effective in helping you learn how to self-sooth and process these memories.
